If you read the local papers, it is clear that it is not just a Rainham problem. Only last week, Collier Row suffered extensive vandalism to shops and homes. Every electioneering campaign, this question is raised as a main concern of the voting public, so the awareness is there. Is it a council problem, or the governments' responsibility to put more police on patrol? Local councillors have highlighted the problems of Rainham at council meetings, there is no easy solution....

Crossing the road at the Cherry Tree is dangerous. It is particularly bad crossing from the side of the Turkish restaurant to the Chinese restaurant. We wait ages for the lights to turn red and, then, there is very little time to cross which must make the elderly and handicapped feel pressurised.

Hi I spend my childhood (40s & 50s) in Rainham and we did not have these problems then. Having said that, the local copper was not adverse to handing out a bit of instant punishment. Never did us kids any harm. Must be a message there somewhere.
Good luck Rainham

Hi every one

im 13 years old and am interested in graffiti and i dont wont to write round Rainham illegal i reckon we should have some graffiti boards to control the graffiti around rainham and give us kids somewhere to exprees ourselfs through art and strongly agree that we should have graffiti boards round rainham in parks such as, tesco park, brookway and springfarm park.. i hope you consider to go forward with this idea and make rainham look cleaner and give us kids to do graffiti legally..

Graffiti question - Why not speak to one of your local councillors or campaigners? Mr Jeff. Tucker can be contacted at his shop at the clock tower (Rainham Gold Mine), or Mr. Pat Bryce, at the travel shop, opposite.

Hello Bernie in NZ. Nice country you live in! I don't know how to go about finding the info you seek. It was a long time ago! Maybe you could buy the book "Rainham History", to try your luck there, or contact Mrs Raggett, on the web-link - http://www.romford.org/histsoc.htm

Re the A13 signs, I did hear that they showed the time in some sort of light/information sequence. Did a quick Google and found the Lodge Avenue display here.

Ah, and now I have found the answers on these sites (isn't Google great?):

http://www.jasonbruges.com/ (great description if you delve far enough but couldn't get the link as it's embedded in flash)

http://www.lightupthenet.com/light_art/index.html :

Jason Brugles has created four interactive sculptures that act as giant litmus papers, sensing and responding to a variety of environmental stimuli, such as daylight, wind and tides in this riverside area. Placed on roundabouts near the A13, the tall, 12 meter high ‘Litmus’ sculptures will be visible to motorists passing by when unveiled on the 1st February.

The sculptures have a steel framed acrylic structure, which supports an array of LED pixels. Each ‘Litmus’ tower reacts to its environment, gathering information and displaying it using different colored LED. Two of the towers are situated near Ferry Lane, marking the borders between an industrial zone and Thames marshes. They measure and display the light levels and tide levels at Tilbury. The latter is particularly important for the RSPB, who monitor birds on the marshes and are one of the stakeholders in the project. "I like the concept of the design. It will generate questions about and interest in, what is going on here," says Jerry Pittaway from the RSPB.

Marsh Way is the site of a further two towers, located where the traffic turns off the A13 into the Rainham area. The southern ‘Litmus’ tower displays the power generated by the neighboring wind turbine while the northern tower counts and displays the amount of traffic entering into the Rainham area.

I don't often see environmentalists and artists agreeing on the validity of a project, especially when it involves lights. Many other public art projects have had to undergo major changes due to concerns of disorienting birds or marine life with out-of-context lighting.

This is a great idea to bring more awareness of the environment to us humans who so often ignore our surroundings. Go Jason!

SO now we know...!

Thank you for that info. Shame they haven't let local residents know what they're for (not that I have much use for knowing tde levels at Tilbury).

Perhaps some information in the local libraries would be nice. They would make quite an interesting school project though.

And I thought they were some sort of giant hair brushes!!

i am looking into moving to rainham, just wondering wot the area is like, wot is there for teenagers to do?

At 11:37 PM, Anonymous said...

In Rainham itself, not much to do for teenagers! There is a swimming pool at the secondary school, and a park used for tennis/football/cricket. It is not far from Romford, for shopping and nightclubbing. There is a Sports complex at Dagenham(Goresbrook) Also, there is a bus to Bluewater shopping centre. http://www.upmystreet.com/l/rainham-4604.html

I am a youth worker in the borough of Newham, after reading some of you comments and visiting your area by the clock tower and past that towards the secondary school, I noticed that a lot of youths were hanging around the streets late at night, and I have also been told of a family in your area that has being racially abused in the area, it seems to me that with the talents of the young people in your borough their is a need for youth centres and community workers in your area, and I believe that if the council put some money in to the youth in your area they might see a difference, we in our centre encourage the young people to be part of their community and take responsibility for where they live, we give them qualifications in volunteering, and encrouge them to passing on their positive skills on to others there age, all of the residents should write to their councilors and fight in a positive way for the young.
